Kadıköy sits on the Asian side of the Bosphorus, a 15-20 minute ferry ride from Sultanahmet, Karaköy, or Beşiktaş. It has no major tourist sights of its own — no mosques or palaces to tick off — and that's largely the point: this is where a lot of Istanbullus actually eat, drink, and shop, from the produce stalls of the Tuesday and Tuesday-adjacent bazaars to the record shops and meyhanes of Moda and Kadıköy's back streets.

Transportation & practical information

The Kadıköy ferry terminal has frequent, cheap crossings to Karaköy, Eminönü, and Beşiktaş, plus the Marmaray rail tunnel under the Bosphorus. The M4 metro line and several bus and dolmuş routes also start here.

Skip the rental car. Istanbul's traffic is some of the worst of any major city, parking in the historic core is scarce, and the tram, metro, and ferry network covers the central neighborhoods faster and far more cheaply.
