Beyoğlu is the hill on the north side of the Golden Horn, centered on the pedestrian İstiklal Street and the medieval Galata Tower. It was Istanbul's European quarter under the Ottomans — the streets are lined with 19th-century apartment buildings, embassies-turned-consulates, and Neoclassical arcades — and today it's the city's densest concentration of bars, live-music venues, and restaurants. What it's actually like to stay here

Dense and energetic, day and night. İstiklal Street draws huge foot traffic at all hours; the side streets around Galata Tower and down into Karaköy are quieter but still lively after dark, with bars and meyhanes filling up well past midnight on weekends.

Transportation & practical information

The Tünel and Karaköy metro stations, the T1 tram at Karaköy, and the Golden Horn ferry docks are all within the district, and the historic Tünel funicular connects Karaköy up to İstiklal Street directly.

Skip the rental car. Istanbul's traffic is some of the worst of any major city, parking in the historic core is scarce, and the tram, metro, and ferry network covers every area in this guide faster and far more cheaply.
