Patong is Phuket's biggest and busiest beach town — a 3-kilometer crescent of sand backed by a dense strip of hotels, malls, restaurants, and bars. It's the default choice for a first trip to Phuket: everything is close together, English is widely spoken, and there's more to do after dark here than anywhere else on the island.

What it's actually like to stay here

Loud, dense, and always on — Bangla Road's neon-lit bars and clubs run late into the night, Jungceylon mall anchors the daytime shopping, and the beach itself is lined with sun loungers and jet-ski touts. It calms down somewhat away from the main strip, but Patong is fundamentally a nightlife town.

Stay here if

Best for first-time visitors who want everything within walking distance, and for nightlife — Bangla Road is Phuket's biggest concentration of bars and clubs, and restaurants and malls stay open late every night.

Stay elsewhere if

Consider another area if you want a quiet, relaxed beach stay — Patong is dense, loud, and touristy even away from Bangla Road, and its beach gets crowded and lined with vendors during the day.

Transportation & practical information

No rail network — songthaews run a loop along the beach road to Phuket Town, and Grab or metered taxis cover trips to other beaches. Phuket International Airport is roughly 40–50 minutes away by road.

A car or scooter is genuinely useful in Phuket, unlike Bangkok or Chiang Mai — the beach towns are spread along the coast and public transport between them is limited to songthaews and Grab. Renting a scooter is common but riskier than it looks: Thai law requires a motorcycle-endorsed license plus an International Driving Permit, and riding without one can void travel insurance. A rental car with an automatic transmission is a safer option for reaching multiple beaches or day trips to viewpoints and waterfalls inland.

If nightlife and having everything within walking distance matter more to you than a relaxed beach, yes. If you'd rather have a calmer stay, Kata or Karon are a short taxi ride south and considerably quieter.
