Kata and Karon sit just south of Patong on Phuket's west coast — two long, gently curving beaches separated by a small headland, with a noticeably calmer pace than Patong despite being only a 15-minute drive away. Kata is the smaller and more walkable of the two, with a compact village center; Karon's beach is longer and its hotels more spread out.

What it's actually like to stay here

Relaxed by Phuket standards — restaurants and beach bars line the main roads, but nothing like Patong's density or noise. Families and couples make up more of the crowd than backpackers or nightlife-seekers.

Transportation & practical information

Songthaews run between Kata, Karon, and Patong roughly every 20–30 minutes during the day; Grab and metered taxis cover the rest. Phuket International Airport is around 45–60 minutes away by road.

A car or scooter is genuinely useful in Phuket, unlike Bangkok or Chiang Mai — the beach towns are spread along the coast and public transport between them is limited to songthaews and Grab. Renting a scooter is common but riskier than it looks: Thai law requires a motorcycle-endorsed license plus an International Driving Permit, and riding without one can void travel insurance. A rental car with an automatic transmission is a safer option for reaching multiple beaches or day trips to viewpoints and waterfalls inland.
