The Old City is the historic heart of Chiang Mai — a nearly square district still bounded by a brick city wall and a moat, laid out when King Mangrai founded the city in 1296. Dozens of temples sit inside its roughly 1.6-kilometer walls, including Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh, and Tha Phae Gate on the eastern wall is the city's best-known landmark and a natural meeting point.

What it's actually like to stay here

Low-rise and unhurried by day, with temple courtyards, guesthouses, and small cafes lining narrow sois between the main roads. Tha Phae Gate and the streets nearest it get busy with visitors and tuk-tuks, but a block or two inward it quiets down fast. Sunday evenings are the exception, when Ratchadamnoen Road closes to traffic for the Walking Street market and the whole district fills with stalls and crowds.

Transportation & practical information

No rail line reaches the Old City — songthaews (shared red pickup trucks), tuk-tuks, and Grab are the main ways to reach Nimman, Chang Klan, or the airport, typically a 10–15 minute ride to any of them.

A car isn't necessary in the city itself — the Old City, Nimman, and Chang Klan are all walkable individually, and songthaews or Grab cover trips between them cheaply. A rental car (or a car with a driver) becomes useful if you're planning day trips into the surrounding mountains, such as to Doi Suthep, Doi Inthanon, or the elephant sanctuaries outside the city, where public transport options thin out.
