Russafa (also spelled Ruzafa) is a grid of 19th-century apartment blocks just south of the train station, built up around its own covered market. Once a plain residential district, it's spent the last decade filling in with independent coffee shops, vermuterías, and restaurants, without losing the everyday feel of people doing their actual shopping at the market stalls.
Local and a little scruffy on the surface — laundromats and hardware stores sit next to specialty coffee shops and wine bars — but that mix is exactly the draw. It feels more like a real neighborhood than a tourist zone, with a slower daytime pace that picks up on café terraces in the evening.
Best for visitors who want a strong food and drink scene on their doorstep and a more local, less touristy base than the old town, while staying close enough to walk to the cathedral and main sights in 15–20 minutes.
Consider Ciutat Vella instead if the historic sights themselves — the cathedral, the silk exchange — are the main reason for your trip and you'd rather step out of the hotel directly into them, or Malvarrosa if you want to be near the beach.

Russafa and Xàtiva metro stations sit on the neighborhood's edges, Valencia's main train station (Estació del Nord) is a short walk away, and city buses run along Gran Vía Marqués del Túria on its northern border. There's no beach in Russafa; Malvarrosa is about a 25-minute tram or bus ride away.
Skip a car if you're staying in the city. Ciutat Vella's streets are narrow and largely pedestrianized, parking is scarce and expensive everywhere central, and the metro/tram network already covers the old town, Russafa, and the beach directly. Rent one only for day trips outside the city — the Albufera lagoon or inland towns — where public transport gets thin.
