Casco Viejo is Bilbao's medieval old town, built up around Las Siete Calles (the Seven Streets), a grid of narrow lanes dating to the 1400s that formed the city's original commercial center and river port. It sits on the right bank of the Nervión, just across the water from Abando, and today it's the densest concentration of pintxo bars, small shops, and historic buildings in the city, anchored by the covered Ribera Market and the 19th-century Arriaga Theatre.

What it's actually like to stay here

Lively and close-packed, especially from late afternoon on. The narrow streets fill with locals and visitors moving bar to bar for pintxos, and Plaza Nueva's arcaded square is a steady gathering point at most hours. It's touristy in parts, particularly near the theatre and cathedral, but the market and side streets still function as a real neighborhood.

Casco Viejo metro station sits at the edge of the neighborhood, on the line connecting to Abando, San Mamés, and the airport bus route. The tram's Ribera or Arriaga stops are also close by, and Abando's main train station is a 10-minute walk across the river.

Skip the rental car if you're staying in the city center. Casco Viejo's streets are narrow and largely pedestrian, parking downtown is limited and metered, and the metro, tram, and a 20-minute riverside walk already connect Casco Viejo and Abando. A car only makes sense for day trips along the coast, such as to Getxo or the beaches further out.
