Abando is Bilbao's 19th-century Ensanche ("widening") district, the grid of wide boulevards built as the city expanded beyond the old town during its industrial boom. It's home to the Guggenheim Museum and the redeveloped Abandoibarra riverfront where old shipyards and warehouses once stood, as well as Gran Vía, the city's main shopping street, and Abando train station. It's the more modern, formal counterpart to Casco Viejo across the river.

Transportation & practical information

Abando station is Bilbao's main rail hub, with metro, tram, and regional and long-distance trains all converging here. The airport bus (Bizkaibus A3247) stops nearby on its way through the center, and the riverside tram line runs directly past the Guggenheim.

Skip the rental car if you're staying in the city center. Casco Viejo's streets are narrow and largely pedestrian, parking downtown is limited and metered, and the metro, tram, and a 20-minute riverside walk already connect Casco Viejo and Abando. A car only makes sense for day trips along the coast, such as to Getxo or the beaches further out.
