Vila Nova de Gaia sits across the Douro from Ribeira — technically its own municipality, though it functions as part of Porto for visitors. It's home to the port wine lodges, among them Sandeman, Graham's, Taylor's, and Calém, where the fortified wine has been aged in riverside cellars since the 18th century, and to the Cais de Gaia promenade, which has the best postcard view of Porto's old town across the water. The Teleférico de Gaia cable car links the riverfront to Jardim do Morro, at the upper deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge.

What it's actually like to stay here

Calmer and more spread out than Ribeira, with wide river views rather than dense old-town streets. The riverfront promenade is touristy and busy with cellar-door tastings and restaurant terraces, but the hillside above it is quieter and largely residential.

Transportation & practical information

The metro's line D crosses the upper deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge to Jardim do Morro station. The lower deck is a level, roughly 5–10 minute walk across to Ribeira, and the Teleférico de Gaia cable car connects the riverfront to the bridge's upper deck.

Skip the rental car in the city center. The historic streets are narrow, steep, and largely one-way, and parking is scarce; the metro, trams, and the funicular already cover the center, and Vila Nova de Gaia is a short walk across the bridge. A car only makes sense for a day trip into the Douro Valley wine region further inland.
