Baixa is Porto's central downtown, spread across two hills at the top of the old town: one around the Sé, Porto's cathedral and the oldest part of the city, and the other around Clérigos Tower and the Art Nouveau Livraria Lello bookstore. Avenida dos Aliados, the wide 20th-century boulevard leading up to City Hall, sits here too, along with São Bento train station and its tiled entrance hall and Trindade station, where every metro line meets. It's the most convenient base for reaching the rest of Porto.

What it's actually like to stay here

More of a working city center than a postcard scene — trams, buses, and everyday foot traffic around Aliados' municipal buildings by day, with restaurants and bars filling the smaller streets toward Clérigos and the cathedral by night. Baixa has Porto's widest range of restaurants, from simple tascas to sit-down dining, across every price bracket.

Stay here if

Best for first-time visitors and budget-conscious travelers who want to be close to everything — São Bento station, Clérigos Tower, Livraria Lello, and Trindade, Porto's main metro interchange, are all within a short walk.

Stay elsewhere if

Consider Ribeira instead if a riverfront setting with more atmosphere after dark matters more to your trip than being close to transit and the widest choice of restaurants.

Transportation & practical information

Trindade and Aliados stations sit at the junction of all of Porto's metro lines, and São Bento is the terminus for regional and some long-distance trains. Most of the areas in this guide are a walkable 10–20 minutes from here.

Skip the rental car in the city center. The historic streets are narrow, steep, and largely one-way, and parking is scarce; the metro, trams, and the funicular already cover the areas in this guide, and Vila Nova de Gaia is a short walk across the bridge. A car only makes sense for a day trip into the Douro Valley wine region further inland.
