Where to Stay in Stare Miasto, Wrocław

Stare Miasto is Wrocław's historic core, built around the Rynek — at roughly 3.8 hectares, one of the largest medieval market squares in Europe — and the smaller Plac Solny (Salt Square) just off its southwest corner. The square is ringed by Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque merchant houses in a wall-to-wall row of pastel facades, centered on the Gothic Old Town Hall with its astronomical clock and pinnacled roofline. Just north of the Rynek, the diminutive "Jaś i Małgosia" (Hansel and Gretel) houses stand beside the brick towers of St. Elizabeth's Basilica, one of the city's oldest and tallest churches. The district is bounded by a ring of moats and parkland (the old city walls, demolished in the 19th century) and includes the University of Wrocław's Baroque main building, a short walk northeast of the square.

What it's actually like to stay here

The liveliest part of the city by a wide margin — street musicians, café terraces spilling onto the cobblestones, and a steady flow of visitors around the Old Town Hall, especially in the evening and on weekends. It's also where most of Wrocław's dwarf statues cluster, so you'll see people crouched over cobblestones looking for them at almost any hour. Side streets off the main square, like around Plac Solny or toward the university, are noticeably calmer.

Flat, compact, and largely pedestrianized at its center — the Rynek, Plac Solny, and St. Elizabeth's Basilica are all within a five-minute walk of each other. It's about a 10-15 minute walk north to Ostrów Tumski across the Oder's bridges, and a similar walk to the main train station to the south.
Noise at night
Rooms directly on the Rynek or near its bar-heavy corners can be noisy on weekend nights, when outdoor seating and foot traffic run late. Streets a block or two off the square, especially toward the university or Plac Solny's quieter side, are considerably calmer.

Transportation & practical information

Trams run along the moat ring (Świdnicka, Podwale, and the boulevards that trace the old city walls) just outside the pedestrianized core, connecting to the main train station, Ostrów Tumski, and the rest of the city. Almost everything inside the district itself is a walk, not a ride.

The Rynek and most of the surrounding streets are pedestrianized, and street parking is limited and metered. Trams just outside the core reach the train station and the rest of the city without needing a car.
