Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island) is where Wrocław began over a thousand years ago, and it still feels set apart from the rest of the city — a cluster of church spires, gas lamps, and quiet cobblestone streets reached by crossing the green iron Tumski Bridge over a side channel of the Oder. The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, with its twin Gothic towers, anchors the district alongside the Baroque Archbishop's Palace, the Church of the Holy Cross, and the University of Wrocław's Botanical Garden along the island's eastern edge. Technically no longer an island — the channel that once separated it from the mainland to the north was filled in long ago — it's still crossed by bridges on every other side and keeps the layout and atmosphere of one.

What it's actually like to stay here

Markedly quieter and more contemplative than the Rynek, with no bars or late-night crowds — just churches, gardens, and a handful of small guesthouses. Every evening at dusk, a lamplighter in a black cloak makes a rounds on foot to hand-light the island's surviving gas lamps, one of the last traditions of its kind still practiced anywhere in Europe. During the day it draws a steady trickle of visitors crossing over from the Rynek, but it never feels crowded the way the main square does.

No trams run onto the island itself; the nearest stops are a short walk away on the Rynek side of the bridges. Everything within Ostrów Tumski is covered on foot, and it's an easy walk into Stare Miasto for onward transport.

Several of the bridges onto the island are pedestrian-only, and parking is very limited. It's close enough to the Rynek and the rest of central Wrocław to reach entirely on foot.
