Monti is Rome's oldest rione, or historic district, just north of the Colosseum. Once a crowded, rough part of the ancient city, it's now known for narrow, sloping streets, small squares, independent boutiques, and a trendy but still relatively low-key atmosphere compared to Centro Storico.

What it's actually like to stay here

Narrow, quiet streets that open onto small piazzas, with a mix of old buildings, independent shops, and wine bars — trendy without feeling overrun, at least outside its busiest corners.

Transportation & practical information

Metro Line B runs through the area, with a stop at Cavour; it's also within walking distance of the Colosseo station on the same line.

Skip the rental car in central Rome. The historic center is a restricted ZTL zone enforced by cameras, streets are narrow and largely one-way, and parking is scarce and expensive. Walking, the metro, and buses cover the historic center.
