Milan
The Duomo area is Milan's historic and commercial core, built around Piazza del Duomo and the cathedral itself. The glass-roofed Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II opens onto the square and leads toward Piazza della Scala and the La Scala opera house. Via Montenapoleone and the rest of the Quadrilatero della Moda, Milan's high-fashion shopping district, sits just northeast of the square. Most of the area is pedestrianized or has limited traffic, and several metro lines converge at Duomo station beneath the piazza.
Busy and monumental during the day, with a steady flow of visitors around the cathedral and the Galleria; the grand shopping streets nearby feel more polished and formal. It quiets down somewhat in the evening once day-trip crowds thin out, though the area around the square stays lively into the night.
Best for first-time visitors who want to be within walking distance of the Duomo, the Galleria, and La Scala, and for anyone prioritizing proximity to Milan's main sights and high-end shopping over a quieter, more residential feel.
Consider another neighborhood if you'd rather avoid the density of day-trippers around the cathedral, or if a quieter, more local evening atmosphere matters more to you than being steps from the main square — Brera is a short walk away and noticeably calmer.

Duomo metro station serves the M1 and M3 lines directly beneath the square, and several tram lines run along the surrounding streets, making it an easy base for reaching the rest of the city.
Milan's city center is Area C, a paid congestion zone: any vehicle entering on a weekday between roughly 7:30am and 7:30pm must pay a daily charge, and cameras at the zone's gates read license plates automatically. Unregistered entry can mean a fine arriving weeks later. Between the metro, trams, and a walkable core, most visitors don't need a car at all.
