Brera sits just north of the Duomo, centered on Palazzo di Brera, a former convent that now houses the Brera Art Gallery and the Brera Academy of Fine Arts. The neighborhood grew into an artists' quarter around these institutions, and its narrow, cobbled streets are lined with art galleries, antique shops, and boutiques. It's one of Milan's older, lower-rise districts, with a more residential scale than the grand streets around the Duomo.
Upscale and relatively calm during the day, with an art-gallery, boutique character rather than heavy foot traffic. In the evening, the streets around Via Fiori Chiari and Via Madonnina fill with bars and restaurants, and outdoor tables spill onto the cobblestones.
Best for couples and travelers interested in art and architecture who want a walkable, upscale neighborhood with a quieter, more local feel than the streets immediately around the Duomo, while still being close to it.
Consider another neighborhood if you want to be directly on top of the Duomo and Galleria without any walk, or if you're on a tight budget — Brera's boutique character tends to come with higher prices than less central areas.

Montenapoleone and Lanza metro stations sit at either edge of the neighborhood, and several tram lines pass through, making it easy to reach the Duomo, the castle, or the rest of the city without a car.
Milan's city center is Area C, a paid congestion zone: any vehicle entering on a weekday between roughly 7:30am and 7:30pm must pay a daily charge, and cameras at the zone's gates read license plates automatically. Unregistered entry can mean a fine arriving weeks later. Between the metro, trams, and a walkable core, most visitors don't need a car at all.
