Oltrarno means "across the Arno" — it's the district on the river's south bank, home to Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens, along with Piazza Santo Spirito and streets of artisan workshops. It's a short walk from the Duomo across the Ponte Vecchio or Ponte Santa Trinita, but it feels noticeably less dense with tourists once you're a block or two off the main crossing points.
More local and lower-key than the historic center across the river, with working artisan workshops alongside cafes and restaurants — Piazza Santo Spirito in particular has an everyday neighborhood feel that contrasts with the sightseeing pace on the other side of the Arno.
Best for visitors who want to be close to the historic center while staying somewhere with more local, everyday character, and for anyone interested in Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens specifically.
Consider another neighborhood if being directly steps from the Duomo, the Uffizi, or the Ponte Vecchio matters most to you — the Oltrarno adds a short walk or bridge crossing to reach the historic center's main sights.

Florence's historic center is a camera-enforced limited traffic zone (ZTL): non-resident vehicles that enter without prior authorization can be fined, even for a brief drop-off.
