This is the dense core of Florence, built around the Duomo and its dome, and stretching to the Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, and the Uffizi Gallery. Nearly every major sight in the city is within a short walk from here — it's the part of Florence most visitors picture before they arrive.
Busy and monumental, especially by mid-morning, with narrow medieval streets opening onto grand piazzas. It's the most visited part of the city, so foot traffic near the top sights can feel heavy for much of the day, easing somewhat in the early morning and evening.
Best for first-time visitors who want to be within walking distance of the Duomo, the Uffizi, and the Ponte Vecchio, and for anyone prioritizing proximity to the major sights over a quieter stay.
Consider another neighborhood if you want a quieter base or lower prices — this is the most touristed and generally most expensive part of Florence, and streets near the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio stay crowded through much of the day.

Everything in this area is walkable, and Firenze Santa Maria Novella train station is about a 10–15 minute walk from the Duomo. Florence's city buses cover the wider area, though they're rarely needed for sights within the historic center itself.
Florence's historic center is a camera-enforced limited traffic zone (ZTL): non-resident vehicles that enter without prior authorization can be fined, even for a brief drop-off. If you're driving to Florence, plan to park outside the ZTL or at your hotel (if it can register your plate) and get around the center on foot.
