Kos Town is the island's capital and port, where the medieval Neratzia Castle guards the harbor entrance and genuine ancient ruins — a Roman-era agora, the Casa Romana villa, and an ancient odeon — sit scattered through the modern streets around it. The Hippocrates Plane Tree, on a small square near the castle, is traditionally said to mark where Hippocrates once taught, though the current tree is a few centuries old rather than ancient. The town's flat layout and dedicated cycling paths make it one of the easiest Greek town centers to explore by bike.

Transportation & practical information

Kos International Airport is about 24km southwest, roughly 30–40 minutes by taxi or transfer. Ferries from Piraeus and other Dodecanese islands dock at the town's port. KTEL buses to Kardamena and other villages leave from the town's bus station.

Kos is flat and genuinely popular for cycling, so a rental car isn't essential if you're staying in one town and comfortable biking or bussing to nearby beaches. Consider one if you want to reach the Asklepion, Kefalos, or beaches further afield on your own schedule.
