Dresden's Altstadt is the reconstructed baroque core on the left bank of the Elbe — a compact 0.8 km² packed with the Zwinger, the Frauenkirche, the Semperoper, and the Residenzschloss. Almost everything here was destroyed in the February 1945 bombing and rebuilt over the following decades, most recently the Frauenkirche itself, completed in 2005. It's Dresden's primary tourist hub, with the highest concentration of hotels and museums in the city.

Transportation & practical information

Ten of Dresden's twelve tram lines serve the Altstadt, and the Hauptbahnhof is a short tram ride or a 20-minute walk away.
