Where to Stay in Altstadt, Dresden

Dresden's Altstadt is the reconstructed baroque core on the left bank of the Elbe — a compact 0.8 km² packed with the Zwinger, the Frauenkirche, the Semperoper, and the Residenzschloss. Almost everything here was destroyed in the February 1945 bombing and rebuilt over the following decades, most recently the Frauenkirche itself, completed in 2005. It's Dresden's primary tourist hub, with the highest concentration of hotels and museums in the city.

Grand and monumental — wide baroque squares, museum courtyards, and a steady flow of tour groups by day, quieting down once the museums close.

Transportation & practical information

Ten of Dresden's twelve tram lines serve the Altstadt, and the Hauptbahnhof is a short tram ride or a 20-minute walk away.

Skip the rental car. The Altstadt is largely pedestrianized, parking is limited and expensive near the center, and the tram network covers the rest of the city faster and more cheaply than driving would.
