Mitte is Berlin's historic core and the most convenient base for first-time visitors — the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, Unter den Linden, and Museum Island's five UNESCO-listed museums all sit within an easy walk of each other. It's touristy in the way any capital's core is, but the concentration of sights and transit connections is unmatched.

Transportation & practical information

Excellent — multiple U-Bahn and S-Bahn lines cross Mitte, including the S-Bahn's central Hackescher Markt and Friedrichstraße stations.

Skip renting a car. Berlin is spread out but flat and well served by the U-Bahn and S-Bahn, and traffic and parking in the center are more hassle than they're worth.

Is Mitte too touristy to stay in?
