Where to Stay in Vieux Lyon, Lyon

Vieux Lyon is Lyon's Renaissance old town, wedged between the Saône river and the base of Fourvière hill. Its narrow, cobbled streets — Rue Saint-Jean, Rue du Bœuf, Rue Lainerie — are lined with 15th- and 16th-century townhouses, many hiding traboules, covered passageways that cut through to the next street or a hidden courtyard. Cathédrale Saint-Jean anchors the southern end of the district, and the Fourvière funicular, reachable from the Vieux-Lyon–Cathédrale Saint-Jean metro station, climbs from here up to the basilica and the Roman theaters above.

Old and photogenic by day, with narrow streets that fill up with visitors following the traboules to the cathedral. It's one of the most touristy parts of Lyon, and it looks it — restaurants and gift shops line the main streets, though quieter side streets like Rue du Bœuf keep more of a lived-in feel. Evenings are calmer, with a handful of livelier bars and restaurant terraces rather than a full nightlife scene.

Best for first-time visitors and architecture fans who want to be inside the postcard version of Lyon, a short funicular ride from Fourvière and a quick footbridge crossing from the Presqu'île.

Consider the Presqu'île instead if you want more restaurant and shopping variety within walking distance, or if crowds on narrow, uneven streets aren't for you — Vieux Lyon's charm comes with heavy foot traffic on its main streets for most of the day.

Walkability
Very walkable within the district itself, but the streets are cobbled and some slope noticeably toward Fourvière hill, so comfortable shoes matter more here than on the flat Presqu'île. Crossing to the Presqu'île means one of a few footbridges over the Saône, all a short walk away.
Noise at night
Quieter at night than the Presqu'île's main squares — most restaurants and bars close at a reasonable hour, and there's no real club scene here. Daytime is a different story: the main tourist streets get loud with foot traffic and tour groups, especially around Rue Saint-Jean.

Transportation & practical information

The Vieux-Lyon–Cathédrale Saint-Jean metro station (line D) sits at the district's southern edge, and the Fourvière funicular leaves from the same station, reaching the basilica in a couple of minutes. The Presqu'île is a 10–15 minute walk away across the Saône on one of several footbridges.

Skip a rental car if you're staying in the center. Lyon has an expanding low-emission zone that bars older vehicles from much of the city, plus a limited traffic zone covering the historic core that restricts general access overnight, and parking is scarce. Trams, the metro, and walking cover the center easily, and the TGV covers day trips to nearby cities faster than driving would.
