Where to Stay in Presqu'île, Lyon

The Presqu'île is the peninsula between the Rhône and Saône rivers, and it's the center of gravity for most visits to Lyon — Place Bellecour, Place des Terreaux, and the main shopping street Rue de la République all sit here. Place Bellecour, one of the largest paved squares in Europe, works as Lyon's kilometer zero, and Place des Terreaux, a few minutes north, is anchored by the Hôtel de Ville and the 19th-century Bartholdi fountain. The Musée des Beaux-Arts, several theaters, and a dense run of restaurants and bouchons fill in the blocks between.

Elegant and busy, built around wide 18th- and 19th-century boulevards and grand squares rather than Vieux Lyon's cramped old-town streets. It's the most commercial part of central Lyon — full of shops, offices, and restaurants — and stays lively well into the evening around Place des Terreaux and the streets near the Opéra.

Transportation & practical information

Metro line A runs the length of the Presqu'île, with stops at Bellecour and Hôtel de Ville, and other lines cross it as well. It's also the natural hub for walking to Vieux Lyon across a footbridge, or reaching Part-Dieu station by metro.

Skip a rental car if you're staying in the center. Lyon has an expanding low-emission zone that bars older vehicles from much of the city, plus a limited traffic zone covering the historic core that restricts general access overnight, and parking is scarce. Trams, the metro, and walking cover the center easily, and the TGV covers day trips to nearby cities faster than driving would.
