Staré Město is Prague's medieval old town, a dense tangle of cobbled lanes fanning out from Old Town Square, where the 15th-century Astronomical Clock draws crowds on the hour. It stretches from the Vltava riverbank to the Na Příkopě boulevard, and includes Josefov, the former Jewish quarter, whose synagogues and Old Jewish Cemetery sit just a few minutes north of the square. Charles Bridge, linking Staré Město to Malá Strana across the river, starts at its western edge.

What it's actually like to stay here

Busy and a little theatrical near the square and Charles Bridge — street performers, souvenir stalls, and a steady flow of tour groups — but the atmosphere calms noticeably a few streets back, where quieter lanes and small courtyards still carry the medieval layout. Josefov feels more solemn and hushed, especially around the Old Jewish Cemetery.

Transportation & practical information

Staroměstská metro station (Line A) sits right on the edge of the neighborhood, a few minutes' walk from Old Town Square and Josefov. Trams 17 and 18 run along the riverbank, but most of Staré Město itself is easiest covered on foot.

Don't bring a car into Staré Město. Streets are narrow, mostly pedestrianized, and parking is scarce and expensive — walking and the metro cover everything here.
