Staré Město is Prague's medieval old town, a dense tangle of cobbled lanes fanning out from Old Town Square, where the 15th-century Astronomical Clock draws crowds on the hour. It stretches from the Vltava riverbank to the Na Příkopě boulevard, and includes Josefov, the former Jewish quarter, whose synagogues and Old Jewish Cemetery sit just a few minutes north of the square. Charles Bridge, linking Staré Město to Malá Strana across the river, starts at its western edge.

Transportation & practical information

Staroměstská metro station (Line A) sits right on the edge of the neighborhood, a few minutes' walk from Old Town Square and Josefov. Trams 17 and 18 run along the riverbank, but most of Staré Město itself is easiest covered on foot.

Skip a rental car for your stay. Prague's historic core has narrow, largely pedestrianized streets, limited and expensive parking, and a dense tram network, and the central neighborhoods are all walkable or a short tram ride from each other. Only consider a car if you're using Prague as a base for day trips into the countryside.
