Malá Strana — the Lesser Town — sits on the west bank of the Vltava, climbing the slope between the river and Prague Castle. Founded in 1257, it kept its Baroque palaces, walled gardens, and cobbled squares largely intact, centered on Malostranské náměstí and the domed St. Nicholas Church. Charles Bridge connects it directly to Staré Město across the river.

Malostranská metro station (Line A) and several tram lines, including the 22, run through the neighborhood and up toward the castle — useful for the climb, since it saves the steepest part of the walk.
