Bodrum Town is the peninsula's historic center, wrapped around a natural double bay with Bodrum Castle standing on the promontory between them. The old town's whitewashed, bougainvillea-lined streets fan out from the castle and marina, packed with shops, restaurants, and the bars of Cumhuriyet Caddesi — known locally as Bar Street. Ferries to the Greek island of Kos leave from the marina, and the ancient Halicarnassus amphitheater sits on the hillside just above the center, a short uphill walk or a quick taxi from the harbor.

Bodrum Town is busy and social rather than sleepy — daytime shoppers and ferry passengers around the marina and bazaar streets, then a livelier crowd filling the harbor-front restaurants and Bar Street's clubs and open-air bars after dark. It's at its most crowded in July and August; spring and autumn are noticeably calmer while keeping the same restaurants and sights open.

Transportation & practical information

Bodrum Town is the peninsula's transit hub — dolmuş minibuses to Yalıkavak, Gümbet, Turgutreis, and other bays leave from here, and it's where the Kos ferry docks. Bodrum-Milas Airport is roughly 35-40 minutes away by taxi or shuttle.

Not essential if you're staying put in Bodrum Town or Yalıkavak and using taxis and dolmuş minibuses to get around. Worth renting if you want to explore several of the peninsula's bays and villages at your own pace, since they're spread out and public transit between them is infrequent.
