Eixample is a 19th-century grid of wide streets with cut-off corners, home to Gaudí's Sagrada Família and Casa Batlló. It's calmer and more residential than the old town, with great shopping and some of the city's best restaurants.

Skip the rental car. Parking is hard to find and pricey, and the streets are narrow. Walking and the metro will get you everywhere in the center.
