Stare Miasto is Warsaw's Old Town, the walled medieval core that was rebuilt almost from scratch after being destroyed in 1944. The Royal Castle, the Old Town Market Square, and the remaining fragments of the city's defensive walls and Barbican all sit within a few minutes' walk of each other, with the quieter New Town Market Square just beyond the old walls to the north.

This is Warsaw at its most picture-postcard — colorful merchant houses around the Market Square, cobbled lanes, street performers and horse-drawn carriages in peak season. It's also the most reconstructed part of the city, which some visitors find more moving once they understand the history rather than less authentic for it. The square itself is busy with restaurant terraces and tour groups through the day; step onto a side street or head north into the New Town and it quiets down fast.

Transportation & practical information

There's no metro station directly in the Old Town — the nearest, Ratusz Arsenał on the M1 line, is a short walk from the square's northern edge. Trams run along the nearby streets, and it's an easy walk into Śródmieście.

Most of the district is pedestrianized or closed to through traffic, and street parking is scarce. A car is a liability here — walking or the nearby tram and metro cover everything you'd need.
