Główne Miasto (the Main Town) is Gdańsk's historic core and the district most visitors picture when they think of the city: the Royal Way running down Długa Street into Długi Targ (the Long Market), past Neptune's Fountain and the Main Town Hall, to the Green Gate on the Motława River. St. Mary's Basilica, one of the largest brick churches in the world, sits just off the main square, and Mariacka Street's amber shops and carved stone porches run between it and the river. Almost every building here is a careful postwar reconstruction of what stood before 1945, rebuilt from photographs and original brick after the district was almost completely destroyed.

Główne Miasto is dense, pedestrianized, and built for walking — cobbled streets lined with tall, narrow merchant houses in Dutch Renaissance and Gothic styles, amber stalls, café terraces, and a steady flow of visitors from mid-morning on. Długi Targ itself is the busiest stretch, especially around Neptune's Fountain, while side streets like Mariacka and Piwna keep more of a quieter, browsing pace even in high season.

Transportation & practical information

The district is compact enough that most visitors just walk it. Trams stop just outside its edges along Wały Jagiellońskie and Podwale Przedmiejskie, reaching the train station and the rest of the city, and the SKM commuter line at Gdańsk Główny connects onward to Sopot and Gdynia.

The Main Town is largely pedestrianized and street parking is scarce and metered. Everything covered in this guide is walkable, and trams and the SKM line handle anything further out.
