Where to Stay in San José del Cabo, Los Cabos

San José del Cabo is the older and quieter of the two Cabo towns, built around a colonial-era plaza and a mission church founded by Jesuit missionaries in 1730. Its historic center and the adjoining Gallery District are laid out on a walkable grid of cobblestone streets a few blocks deep, lined with restaurants, boutiques, and art galleries rather than the bars and clubs of Cabo San Lucas. The beach itself sits a bit further out and isn't the draw here — this is a town to walk around in, not a beachfront strip.

What it's actually like to stay here

Relaxed and low-key by day, with a genuine local feel around the plaza and market streets, and a modest evening scene centered on restaurants and, in high season, the Thursday-night Art Walk when the Gallery District's galleries open late.

Stay here if

Best for couples and first-time visitors who want a quieter, more historic base with restaurants and art galleries in walking distance, and for architecture and history fans drawn to the town's colonial-era core.

Stay elsewhere if

Consider Cabo San Lucas instead if a walk-to-everything beach or a lively nightlife scene matters more to you than a historic, low-key setting — San José del Cabo's own beach is a taxi ride from most of the historic center.

Walkability
Very walkable within the historic center and adjoining Gallery District, where cobblestone streets connect the plaza, restaurants, and galleries in a few minutes on foot. The beachfront hotel strip nearer the estuary sits outside this walkable core.
Noise at night
Quiet, especially compared to Cabo San Lucas — most nights it's restaurant chatter rather than club noise, though the plaza and surrounding streets get busier during the Thursday Art Walk in high season.

Transportation & practical information

The historic center and Gallery District are walkable on their own. Los Cabos International Airport is a short drive away, and taxis or the Suburcabos bus cover trips to Cabo San Lucas or the Tourist Corridor.

Skip the rental car if you're staying inside either town's walkable core — taxis and, in Cabo San Lucas, ride-hailing apps cover everything. A car (or at least budgeting for taxis) becomes more useful if you plan to split your trip between both towns or head out to beaches and restaurants along the Corridor.
