Where to Stay in Città Antica (Historic Centre), Verona

The Città Antica is the walled historic core held inside a loop of the Adige, and it contains almost everything a visitor comes to Verona for. Piazza Bra and the Arena anchor its southern end; Via Mazzini runs north from there to Piazza delle Erbe, the old Roman forum, now a long market square under frescoed houses and the Torre dei Lamberti; and Castelvecchio with its fortified bridge sits at the western edge. The whole of it is a limited-traffic zone and walkable end to end in about twenty minutes.

What it's actually like to stay here

Pink marble underfoot, Roman walls built into medieval houses, and squares that work as outdoor rooms rather than traffic islands. Busy with day visitors around the Arena and Juliet’s balcony, and much better a street or two off Via Mazzini — Piazza dei Signori next to Piazza delle Erbe is quieter and better. On opera nights the southern end fills from late afternoon.

Stay here if

Anyone with one or two nights in Verona who wants to walk to everything, eat somewhere different each evening, and finish a road trip without needing the car again.

Walkability
Excellent and almost entirely flat. Piazza delle Erbe is about ten minutes on foot from Piazza Bra up Via Mazzini; Castelvecchio and the Ponte Scaligero are roughly fifteen minutes west of Piazza Bra; and the Castel San Pietro funicular is about twenty-five minutes across the river, or a short taxi. Nothing inside the walls needs transport.
Noise at night
Lively rather than noisy. Via Mazzini and the squares carry foot traffic into the evening, and Piazza Bra is busiest before and after Arena performances. Streets off the main axis are markedly quieter, and the zone’s traffic restrictions keep car noise low throughout.

Best Hotels in Città Antica (Historic Centre), Verona

Hotel Accademia

Highlights

  • Just off Via Mazzini, midway between Piazza Bra and Piazza delle Erbe
  • About 350 metres from the Arena, close enough to walk back after an opera
  • Rooftop terrace overlooking the old-town roofs

Hotel Colomba d’Oro

★★★★
  • 🏛️ Best for architecture & design

Our take A genuinely old building rather than one styled to look like one — which for a city whose whole appeal is its layers is the right kind of place to stay.

Highlights

  • About 150 metres from the Arena, on the quieter side of Piazza Bra
  • Set in a restored medieval convent rather than a modern building
  • Steps from the Arena’s evening crowd without being in it

What to know

  • Piazza Bra fills before and after Arena performances, which is audible on summer opera nights

Hotel Giberti & Spa

★★★★
  • 🤫 Best for a quiet stay

Our take The practical choice rather than the romantic one — you give up being inside the Città Antica and get larger, quieter rooms, a spa, and the station within walking distance.

Highlights

  • Notably spacious rooms and suites for a central Verona hotel
  • Small spa on site, rare at this price in the city
  • Easy walk to Porta Nuova station for onward trains

What to know

  • Outside the historic walls — Piazza Bra and the Arena are about a ten-minute walk
  • Less atmospheric than the converted historic buildings inside the Città Antica

Transportation & practical information

On foot inside the walls. Porta Nuova station, with fast trains to Milan and Venice, is about twenty minutes’ walk or a short bus ride south. Verona Villafranca airport is roughly twenty-five minutes by road. Garages sit just outside the walls for anyone arriving by car.

Don’t drive into Verona. The centre is a camera-enforced limited-traffic zone, the whole historic core is walkable end to end, and a car is useful only for arriving and leaving — which is why a road trip ending here should drop it on arrival rather than the next morning.

Frequently asked questions

Is the historic centre the right place to stay in Verona?
For a one or two night visit, yes — it is compact, flat and holds nearly everything worth seeing, so you can walk everywhere and leave the car outside the walls. Staying further out saves money but adds a commute into a city you can cross in twenty minutes.
Can my hotel get me into the traffic zone?
If it stands inside the zone, yes — but it has to file your plate with the Polizia Locale in advance, so email the rental’s registration and your arrival date before you travel rather than sorting it on the day.
