Where to Stay in Varenna Village & Waterfront, Varenna

Varenna is small enough that the village and its waterfront function as a single area. The ferry pier and the Olivedo quayside sit at the northern end; the stepped lanes of the old village climb behind them to Piazza San Giorgio, where the church and most of the restaurants are; and the lakeside walk runs south past the hotels to the gates of Villa Cipressi and Villa Monastero. Everything is within a few hundred metres, but very little of it is flat.

What it's actually like to stay here

Busy and briefly crowded when the day boats land, then genuinely quiet by early evening once the crowds have gone back to Bellagio and Como. Ochre and pink houses, washing lines over stepped lanes, restaurant tables on terraces cut into the slope, and the lake always a few metres below.

Stay here if

Couples and first-time Lake Como visitors who want to walk to the ferry, the gardens and dinner without moving a car, and who would rather have a quiet evening village than a lively town.

Walkability
Everything is close but the ground is steep. From the ferry pier the old village lanes climb to Piazza San Giorgio in a few minutes, and the two villa gardens at the southern edge are about 400 to 500 metres from the pier — eight to ten minutes at a normal pace, longer if the steps slow you down. The railway station sits above the village, a steep ten-minute climb or a short taxi.
Noise at night
Quiet overall. Daytime brings ferry traffic and day visitors to the waterfront and Piazza San Giorgio, but the village empties in the evening and there is no nightlife to speak of. Rooms on the lakefront catch some quayside noise around sailings.

Best Hotels in Varenna Village & Waterfront, Varenna

Hotel Royal Victoria, by R Collection Hotels

★★★★
  • 🏆 Our overall pick

Our take A proper lakefront hotel with a pool and gardens, in the centre of the village rather than out along the shore — worth the premium over the three-stars if the garden and lake frontage matter.

Highlights

  • Right on Piazza San Giorgio, minutes from the ferry, the lanes and the villa gardens
  • Two restaurants on site, one facing Bellagio across the water
  • A 19th-century building with lake-facing rooms rather than a modern block

What to know

  • The square outside is one of the busier spots by day, though it quiets in the evening
  • Varenna is stepped throughout — the hotel is centrally placed, but getting anywhere else still means stairs

Hotel Olivedo

★★★
  • 📍 Best location
  • 💰 Best value

Our take Built for a trip that runs on the lake rather than the village — you step out of the door and you are at the ferry pier, for well under the four-star rates.

Highlights

  • Directly opposite the ferry pier, so the boats are a few steps away
  • Front rooms look straight across the water to Bellagio
  • Restaurant on site facing the quay, so dinner needs no walk at all

What to know

  • The quayside is the busiest part of the village around sailings, so front rooms trade the view for some noise
  • It is a historic building — rooms vary in size and the stairs are part of the deal

Albergo Milano

★★★
  • ❤️ Best for couples

Our take For a couple who would rather have a terrace and a small, personal hotel than a pool and a big resort — and who don't mind paying less than the lakefront four-stars for it.

Highlights

  • A large terrace over the lake where breakfast is served, the main draw.
  • In the old village's pedestrian lanes, minutes from the ferry and the villa gardens
  • Small and individually decorated, with several rooms having their own balcony or terrace

What to know

  • No lift, and the hotel is reached through stepped lanes — a real consideration with heavy luggage
  • Not on the waterfront itself; the lake views come from the terrace and the balconies

Hotel Villa Cipressi, by R Collection Hotels

★★★★
  • ✨ Best luxury

Our take You are paying for the garden, and on that basis it delivers: terraced grounds on the water you can walk before they open to the public. The rooms don't match the price the setting commands.

Highlights

  • Terraced botanical gardens running down to the lake, open to guests outside public visiting hours
  • Directly next to Villa Monastero, at the quiet southern end of the village
  • A genuinely historic villa building rather than a hotel styled to look like one

What to know

  • Rooms are spread between the villa and its outbuildings and vary considerably — worth checking which you are booking
  • About a ten-minute walk from the ferry pier, much of it stepped

Transportation & practical information

Ferries from the pier reach Bellagio, Menaggio and Cadenabbia in fifteen to twenty minutes and are the practical way to see the rest of the lake. Direct regional trains from Varenna-Esino-Perledo station reach Milano Centrale in about an hour. Within the village, everything is on foot.

A car is a liability in Varenna itself — the village is stepped and largely closed to traffic, and parking is genuinely scarce. It is useful only for arriving and leaving; the lake is better handled by ferry, which is faster and far less stressful than the shore roads.

Frequently asked questions

Is there more than one area to stay in Varenna?
No — the village and its waterfront are the whole of it. Hotels sit either on the quayside near the ferry, in the lanes around Piazza San Giorgio, or along the lakeside walk toward the villa gardens, all within a few hundred metres.
Can I walk from the ferry to my hotel with luggage?
Usually yes, but expect steps. The quayside hotels are level with the pier; anything in the upper lanes or toward the gardens involves stairs, so ask your hotel about the approach if you are carrying heavy bags.
