Where to Stay in Egilsstaðir Town Center, Egilsstaðir

Egilsstaðir is small enough that there's really only one place to stay: the town center itself, a short grid of streets built up around Kaupvangur and Miðvangur just off the Ring Road. The supermarket, swimming pool, filling station, and every hotel in town sit within a few minutes' walk of each other and of Egilsstaðakirkja, the modern white church on the rocky rise above the center. There's no separate district worth treating as its own Area — Vök Baths and Lake Urriðavatn, the town's best-known nearby draw, sit about 5 km north on the far side of the lake, a short drive rather than a walk from here, and Hallormsstaðaskógur forest is further still. The whole of walkable Egilsstaðir functions as one compact base.

What it's actually like to stay here

Quiet and practical rather than picturesque — a modern service-town center of low commercial buildings, a supermarket car park, and a school and swimming pool complex, with mountains and open valley visible in every direction. There's genuinely little to look at beyond the church and the valley views; the appeal here is convenience for a Ring Road overnight, not charm.

Stay here if

Best for road-trippers who just need a walkable, well-equipped base for one night between the East Fjords and North Iceland, and for anyone who wants to walk to dinner and the supermarket without moving the car again after checking in — before driving the short distance to Vök Baths the same evening or the next morning.

Walkability
Very walkable — hotels in the center sit within about a 6-minute walk of each other, with the Nettó supermarket, swimming pool, and the town's restaurants clustered in the same small area. Egilsstaðakirkja and the surrounding rocky outcrops are also an easy walk from the center.
Noise at night
Quiet outside the main road. Egilsstaðir has essentially no nightlife, and most of the town center is calm in the evening; rooms facing Route 1 itself, which cuts along the eastern edge of the center, can pick up some through-traffic noise.

Gistihúsið - Lake Hotel Egilsstadir

★★★
  • 📍 Best location

Our take Right on Lagarfljót, with lake and mountain views from many rooms — an outlook that's genuinely rare in a town this size.

Highlights

  • Lakefront position on Lagarfljót, with mountain views from many rooms and public areas
  • On-site spa, restaurant, and bar — unusual for a hotel in a town this small
  • Built on a working farm site dating to 1903, with more character than newer builds

What to know

  • Rooms are comfortable rather than styled — the lakefront setting, not the interiors, is the draw

Hérað - Berjaya Iceland Hotels

★★★★
  • 💰 Best value

Our take A straightforward, centrally located choice in a town with limited options — nothing flashy, but a full-service hotel right in the middle of the walkable core.

Highlights

  • The most central hotel in Egilsstaðir, a couple of minutes from the supermarket and shops
  • On-site restaurant and bar, useful in a town with few places to eat
  • Larger, modern rooms with standard amenities including air conditioning

What to know

  • Rooms are functional rather than stylish — this is a practical overnight stop, not a design hotel
  • Sits just off Route 1, so some road noise is possible in rooms facing the main road

Transportation & practical information

Everything in the town center is a walk, not a drive. Onward travel is almost entirely by rental car, since nearly every visitor is here as one stop on a self-drive Ring Road itinerary; Egilsstaðir Airport, a few minutes outside town, also has several Icelandair flights a day to Reykjavík.

Egilsstaðir is where a Ring Road trip pauses after the East Fjords, and the car you arrived in is what gets you to Vök Baths, Hallormsstaðaskógur, Hengifoss and Seyðisfjörður at your own pace. A domestic flight from Reykjavík is a realistic alternative if you're not driving the whole loop — you'll still want to rent a car locally once you land.

Frequently asked questions

Is there more than one area to choose between in Egilsstaðir?
Not really. The town center covers essentially the whole walkable settlement, so there's no second neighborhood to compare it against — and Vök Baths, the area's best-known draw, has no lodging of its own.
Can I walk to Vök Baths from the town center?
No — Vök Baths is about 5 km north on the far shore of Lake Urriðavatn, roughly a 5-minute drive. It's a short excursion from town, not something reachable on foot.
