Hafnarstræti sloping past downtown Akureyri's landmark red house toward the fjord

Akureyri

Where to Stay in Miðbær (Downtown), Akureyri

Miðbær is effectively all of visitor-facing Akureyri: a single curving spine, Hafnarstræti, running along the Eyjafjörður waterfront with a 600-meter pedestrian stretch of cafés, restaurants, and shops at its center. Akureyrarkirkja's twin-spired church sits on a hill directly above it, reached by a steep flight of steps from Hafnarstræti, and Ráðhústorg, the small main square, anchors the street's northern end near the harbor. A short walk south, past the older Innbær district's 19th-century timber houses, leads to Lystigarðurinn, one of the world's northernmost botanical gardens. This is the town's only genuinely walkable, hotel-and-restaurant district — everything a Ring Road stopover needs sits inside it.

What it's actually like to stay here

Small-town and unhurried compared to Reykjavík's downtown — Hafnarstræti has a working mix of local cafés, a few restaurants, and gift shops rather than a dense nightlife strip, and it's genuinely quiet by 9 or 10pm most nights. The steep walk up to Akureyrarkirkja and back down through Innbær's old timber houses toward the botanical garden is the area's signature stretch.

Stay here if

Best for Ring Road travelers who want one walkable base for the night, first-time visitors curious about a real (if small) Icelandic town beyond Reykjavík, and families who'll use the botanical garden and the geothermal swimming pool at the top of the hill.

Walkability
Very walkable — Hafnarstræti's pedestrian core is 600 meters end to end, and even reaching Akureyrarkirkja at the top of the hill or Lystigarðurinn botanical garden to the south adds only about 10-15 minutes on foot each way.
Noise at night
Quiet overall — Akureyri has nothing like Reykjavík's bar scene, and Hafnarstræti empties out well before midnight most nights; hotel rooms directly on the pedestrian street can still pick up some evening chatter and delivery traffic.

★★★★
  • 🏆 Our overall pick

Our take A dependable, full-service hotel on Hafnarstræti, big enough to absorb a Ring Road night when the smaller guesthouses are full.

  • A true Hafnarstræti address, a short flat walk to most of downtown's restaurants and shops
  • Rooms give it more space and flexibility than Akureyri's smaller guesthouses
  • An on-site à la carte restaurant, useful on a low-energy Ring Road evening

What to know

Hótel Norðurland by Keahotels

★★★
  • 💰 Best value

Our take A solid, unpretentious downtown option a block off Hafnarstræti — the pick for travelers who want to be central without the price tag of Akureyri's two 4-star hotels.

Highlights

  • A genuinely central Geislagata address, one block from Hafnarstræti's restaurants and shops
  • Breakfast buffet included, useful for an early start toward Mývatn or the Ring Road
  • Free parking, a real convenience for a one-night road-trip stop

Akureyri - Berjaya Iceland Hotels

★★★

Our take A dependable, larger chain hotel set slightly back from the downtown core — a good fit for a family swim stop, at the cost of being a walk uphill from Hafnarstræti's restaurants.

Highlights

  • Directly across the street from Akureyri's geothermal swimming pool, an easy add-on for families
  • Rooms give it more availability than downtown's smaller properties in peak season
  • A quieter, more residential setting than a Hafnarstræti-facing room

What to know

  • It's roughly a 10-minute uphill walk back to Hafnarstræti's restaurants and shops
  • As a larger chain property, it has less individual character than Akureyri's smaller hotels

Transportation & practical information

Nearly everything is a walk from anywhere in Miðbær. Akureyri's town buses are free to ride and loop back to the central stop near Ráðhústorg every 30-50 minutes, useful for hotels set higher up the hill near the swimming pool; Akureyri Airport is about 3km away, a short taxi ride.

Akureyri sits on the Ring Road, and nearly everyone staying here arrives already driving it — the natural fifth overnight stop after a day of Húsavík whale-watching and Goðafoss, with the car carrying you on to Mývatn or further round the loop. Downtown itself needs none. Flying in from Reykjavík is possible, but that suits travelers coming for North Iceland alone rather than the road trip this town is usually part of.
