Altstadt-Lehel is the historic core of Munich, packed inside the line of the medieval city walls. Marienplatz, the Frauenkirche, the Hofbräuhaus, and the daily Viktualienmarkt food market all sit within a few minutes' walk of each other. Lehel, on the quieter eastern edge toward the Isar river, adds leafy streets and a handful of museums without losing the central location.
Grand and touristy at its Marienplatz core, with street performers, souvenir shops, and crowds around the Glockenspiel; it turns noticeably calmer and more residential a few streets east into Lehel.
Best for first-time visitors who want to walk out the door and be at the city's main sights, and for anyone who wants Munich's classic postcard views right outside their hotel.
Consider another neighborhood if you want a local, non-touristy feel, or a quiet stay — the core streets around Marienplatz stay busy well into the evening.

Skip the rental car. The old town is largely pedestrianized, parking is limited and expensive, and the U-Bahn and S-Bahn cover the rest of the city faster than driving would.
