Frankfurt's Altstadt is the small, reconstructed core of the medieval city, packed around the Römerberg square, the cathedral, and the Museumsufer footbridge. Nearly every building here was rebuilt after World War II — most recently in the Dom-Römer project, completed in 2018, which recreated a whole quarter of half-timbered houses and narrow lanes between the Römer and the cathedral.

Transportation & practical information

Everything in the old town is walkable. The Dom/Römer U-Bahn stop and the Eiserner Steg footbridge to Sachsenhausen are both a few minutes away, and Willy-Brandt-Platz connects to the rest of the city.

Skip the rental car. The old town is largely pedestrianized, parking is limited and expensive near the center, and the U-Bahn and S-Bahn cover the rest of the city faster than driving would.
