The Carré d'Or ("Golden Square") is Nice's upscale seafront district, sitting on the Promenade des Anglais between Vieux Nice and the wider Belle Époque city. It's centered on Rue Paradis and Avenue de Verdun, both lined with international fashion boutiques, and takes in Place Masséna at its inland edge. The Hôtel Négresco, with its distinctive pink dome, marks its western end right on the Promenade. The pebble beach runs the length of the district, and Vieux Nice is about a 10–15 minute walk east.

What it's actually like to stay here

Quieter and more residential than Vieux Nice, with wide 19th-century boulevards, upscale hotels, and designer shopping rather than market stalls and bars. It still has plenty of cafes and restaurants — just a calmer, more grown-up version of what's a few minutes away in the old town.

Transportation & practical information

Tram Line 1 stops at Masséna and Jean Médecin, both inside or right at the edge of the district and about 150 meters apart, with frequent trams toward the old town, the train station, and Garibaldi. Tram Line 2, which runs underground beneath the center between the airport and the port, also has a stop near Masséna.

Skip a rental car if you're staying in the center and sticking to the coast — the tram covers the city well, and trains reach most Riviera towns along the water faster than driving, especially in summer traffic. A car starts to make more sense if you want to reach hill villages like Èze or Saint-Paul-de-Vence, or the interior, where train and bus service thins out.
