The Historic Centre is essentially all of Český Krumlov that a visitor ever sees: the old town packed onto the peninsula the Vltava wraps into a horseshoe bend, and Latrán, the smaller quarter across the river at the foot of the castle. The two were separate settlements until they were united under one town charter in 1555, and they're still linked today by a single wooden footbridge. Náměstí Svornosti, the main square, sits at the peninsula's center, ringed by Gothic and Renaissance burgher houses; Latrán's one curving street leads up to the castle's courtyards and gardens on the ridge above. Nearly every hotel, restaurant, and sight in Český Krumlov sits inside this one compact area.

What it's actually like to stay here

Busy and photogenic by day — narrow lanes fill with day-trippers and tour groups from around mid-morning, heaviest on the main square and the route up to the castle, and it can feel genuinely crowded in July and August. Once the tour buses pull out in the late afternoon, the streets empty out fast and the town turns quiet and a little sleepy, with locals and overnight guests left to have the squares and riverside benches largely to themselves.

Best for first-time visitors and couples who want to be inside the old town itself, a short walk from the castle, the main square, and the river, and for architecture fans who want Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque buildings within a few minutes of each other. It also works well as a quieter overnight base for anyone doing the town as part of a longer Prague trip, since staying here means seeing it before and after the day-trip crowds.

Stay elsewhere if

There isn't really an alternative area to consider in Český Krumlov — this is the only part of town most visitors have any reason to stay in. Skip an overnight stay altogether, and just do it as a day trip from Prague or Český Budějovice, if cobbled, sometimes steep streets and a lack of late-night options would bother you, or if you'd rather avoid the midday crowds than work around them.

Walkability
Very walkable, and largely car-free — cars have been barred from the pedestrian zone since mid-2025, even for guests staying inside it. Streets are cobbled and narrow, and Latrán's climb up toward the castle gets steep, but the whole area is small enough to cross on foot in well under an hour.
Noise at night
Loud with foot traffic by day, especially around the main square and the route to the castle, but there's little late-night noise — restaurants and bars mostly wind down at a reasonable hour, and the streets go genuinely quiet once the day-trip crowds leave in the afternoon.

Transportation & practical information

The area itself needs no transport — everything is a walk away. Getting in from outside is the harder part: the train station sits about 1.7km (roughly a 30-minute walk) north of the center, while the bus station is closer, about a 5–10 minute walk away, and most visitors arrive by bus rather than train. A taxi is an easy option from either station if you're carrying luggage.

Don't plan on driving into this area. It's a pedestrian zone with entry restricted to permit holders, streets are narrow and cobbled, and since mid-2025 not even overnight guests can drive to their hotel door — you park at one of the lots on the edge of town and walk in with your bags.
