Where to Stay in Rio Vermelho, Salvador

Rio Vermelho is Salvador's bohemian, artier neighborhood, built up around a former fishing village and still centered on the small whitewashed Casa de Iemanjá shrine at the water's edge. It's the city's best base for eating and going out — a dense cluster of seafood restaurants, acarajé stalls, and bars fills the streets around Largo da Mariquita and Largo de Santana most evenings, and it's genuinely popular with locals rather than being a tourist-only strip. It's also home to the city's biggest religious festival, the Festa de Iemanjá on February 2nd, when the neighborhood fills with offerings and crowds honoring the Candomblé deity of the sea.

What it's actually like to stay here

Relaxed and unpolished by day, with a working fishing-village feel around the shrine and beach; genuinely lively by night, when the restaurant terraces and bars along Largo da Mariquita fill with a mix of locals and visitors. It feels less curated for tourists than Pelourinho or Barra.

Stay here if

Stay here if a strong local food and nightlife scene matters more to you than beach time or historic sightseeing, and you don't mind a taxi ride to Pelourinho's landmarks.

Stay elsewhere if

Stay in Pelourinho instead if the historic sites are your priority, or in Barra if a calm, swimmable beach right outside your hotel matters more than restaurants and bars — Rio Vermelho's own beach is rockier and less suited to swimming.

Walkability
The restaurant-and-bar core around Largo da Mariquita and Largo de Santana is compact and easily walkable. Streets are flatter here than in Pelourinho, though still with some hills further inland.

Lively at night around the main bar streets, especially on weekends, and can run late; quieter during the day and on residential side streets away from the restaurant cluster.

Transportation & practical information

Rio Vermelho sits about 4km from Barra, typically 10-15 minutes by taxi or rideshare, and roughly 9km from Pelourinho, closer to 20-25 minutes depending on traffic. Neither distance is realistic to walk.

Not worth it for time spent in the neighborhood itself — the restaurant core is walkable, parking is limited on the busiest streets at night, and rideshares handle trips to Barra or Pelourinho easily.
