Where to Stay in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro

Ipanema sits just south of Copacabana, past the rocky point of Arpoador, its beach framed at the far end by the twin peaks of Morro Dois Irmãos. Lower-rise and more residential than Copacabana, it built its reputation in the 1960s as the birthplace of bossa nova — "Garota de Ipanema" ("The Girl from Ipanema") was written about a woman who walked past a bar near the beach's Posto 9. Today it's Rio's most upscale beach neighborhood, known for boutiques along Rua Visconde de Pirajá, a strong restaurant scene, and a Sunday craft fair at Praça General Osório.

What it's actually like to stay here

Calmer and more polished than Copacabana, with a younger, design-conscious energy around Posto 9 and a quieter, more family-oriented feel toward Posto 10. Tree-lined residential streets sit just a block or two behind the beachfront avenue.

Walkability
Flat and easy to walk along the beachfront Avenida Vieira Souto and the parallel shopping streets. It's a long neighborhood end to end, so a hotel near Posto 9 and one near the Leblon border can be a 20-minute walk apart.
Noise at night
Quieter after dark than Copacabana overall, though Vieira Souto still carries beach and traffic noise; the streets around Praça General Osório and its bars stay lively into the evening, especially on weekends.

Transportation & practical information

Ipanema's one metro stop, General Osório (Line 1), sits at Praça General Osório and is about a 5-minute walk from the beach — convenient for hotels in central Ipanema, less so for ones toward the Leblon end, which lean more on buses, taxis, or rideshare. It's a few stops on the same line to Copacabana.

Skip a rental car here too. Parking is limited and traffic on the beachfront avenue is heavy at peak times, while the metro, buses, and ride-hailing apps handle the neighborhood and its connections to Copacabana and Leblon well.
